Fort Buchanan highlights lithium battery safety during Fire Prevention Week
FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico — Installation leaders and firefighters gathered at command headquarters Sept. 30 to mark Fire Prevention Week, raise awareness of lithium-ion battery hazards and promote safe charging, storage and handling practices across the community.
This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” focuses on batteries commonly used in cellphones, laptops, scooters, power tools and other electronic devices.
Fernando J. Vélez, assistant fire chief of prevention at Fort Buchanan Fire and Emergency Services, said lithium batteries are the campaign’s primary safety focus this year.
“This year, the big focus is lithium batteries — scooters, phones and everything running off them,” Vélez said. “Year-round, we’re doing nonstop inspections, but this is where we’re going to be focusing our message and teaching people about safety.”
During the event, Acting Garrison Manager Ulises Marrero signed a proclamation supporting the campaign and encouraging the community to make fire safety part of daily life.
“As important as it is to put out fires, as you do all the time, I think it’s more important to prevent those fires,” Marrero said. “You do a tremendous job.”
Damaged batteries, excessive heat, improper storage and the use of incorrect charging equipment can increase the risk of fire. Firefighters encourage community members to follow manufacturer instructions, use approved chargers and inspect batteries and devices for signs of damage.
Fire Prevention Week gives the department an opportunity to highlight a specific safety concern while reinforcing its year-round mission of identifying hazards and educating the community.
Fort Buchanan Fire and Emergency Services also conducts outreach with local schools and community organizations, extending its fire safety message beyond the installation.
Community members seeking additional information about lithium-ion battery safety or fire prevention may contact Fort Buchanan Fire and Emergency Services at 787-707-3410.
Fort Buchanan supports approximately 15,000 military personnel, including active-duty Soldiers, Army Reserve, Puerto Rico National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve and Navy Reserve members. The installation’s mission is to enable readiness and facilitate the deployment of forces anytime, anywhere.
